How to improve calculation speed in maths for quantitative aptitude

This mostly happens when we are appearing in any exam, chilling with our friends discussing something and all of a sudden there is some kind of calculation thing happens. It becomes embarrassing when you went out to a grocery store to get something and then after the payment you end up struggling with the total amount that you need to pay, or with the change that the shopkeeper is giving you. The most embarrassing is the situation when you think that you have done the right calculation and the shopkeeper has given you less or more, then you tell the same thing to the shopkeeper, and he explains you how he did it.

Calculation speed is not a rocket science, it’s just practice. Yes, few people have the natural ability and they are naturally good with numbers which includes calculation of any sort or remembering the numbers associated with something or someone, but this does not mean that people who are not born with this ability can’t have a good calculation speed.

Step 1 – Avoid Calculators: From now on, whatever calculation comes in front of you, “do it in your mind” or “do it mentally”. We always struggle whenever there is something related to calculation that comes in front of us, we try to get a pen and a paper to calculate, we also look out for a calculator, or now days we tend to do the calculations on our mobile. This does not help at all. It only makes us more and more dependent on extra things when we can do the same in our mind.

Step 2 – Practice Daily: Now, when you leave this habit of using something for your day to day calculation, then all you need is to practice. Practice as much as you can by giving time every single day. Try doing the same thing for 30 days and for 30 mins each day. If you can take out more time, then its even better. The more you practice, the more benefits you will have and you will at the end of the month. It’s not the total amount of time that you put in at the end of the day, it’s the regular practice that is required every day, remember the way you used to practice when you were in your school.

Step 3 – Start with Basics: Always keep one thing in mind – “ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY”. This means that everything takes time and everything should start from the basics. It’s like putting a foundation while making a multi-storied building. Start fresh, start slow and then build your way up. You don’t have to jump to tedious calculation when you are struggling with a simple addition. This will only bring your motivation down. So, start with basic operation of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Step 4 – Learn the basic things: Once you do the basic operation in maths, you need to learn the basic things that we have learnt in our schools too. Below is the list of the most basic things that you need to learn in order to improve your calculation speed.

  • Learn the Multiplication Tables from 1 to 20. This is the minimum that is required.
  • Learn the square of a number, which is multiplying a number with itself. Example: 4×4, 15×15 etc. The minimum which is required is from 1 to 20.
  • Learn the cube of a number, which is multiplying a number three times with itself. Example: 15x15x15, 19x19x19. Again, the minimum that is required is from 1 t0 20.
  • Learn the reciprocals from 1 to 20. Reciprocal is when 1 is divided by the number. Example: 1/1, 1/9, 1/17 etc. The minimum which is required is from 1 to 20.
