Averages are often used in sports: batting averages which means number of hits to number of times at bat. Gas mileage is determined by using averages. Also Known As: Central tendency. A measure of the middle value of the data set.

2) A number expressing the central or typical value in a set of data, in particular the mode, median, or (most commonly) the mean, which is calculated by dividing the sum of the values in the set by their number.
